Neonatal Pharmacists

Neonatal Pharmacists are health professionals with a degree of advanced studies in Pharmacy. Though some of their activities are not so different from pediatric and regular pharmacists, Neonatal Pharmacists must deal with the challenge of treating the most vulnerable. So, apart from the average duties related to providing information and drugs to the health personal and patients –or their parents in this case- they must be true experts in the use of medicines to attend the needs of sick or premature babies.

For example, one of the biggest challenges is the one related to the dosages. Unlike what happens with adult patients, Neonatal Pharmacists usually have to administrate medicines that consist of just milligrams to the new-born. In fact, a “little” one-milligram mistake can cause them serious disorders, especially when they do not weight enough, which normally occurs in premature babies.

Regarding their career in the hospitals, though the grade of responsibility may vary, Neonatal Pharmacists are usually related to any specialization service for neonates, apart from carrying the neonatal pharmacy through. In many cases, their knowledge is taken advantage of when it comes to educate other health professionals. For example, in general physicians count very much on Neonatal Pharmacists’ recommendations, as attending to babies, as we have already explained, is not the same as dealing with adult patients.

Although in many hospitals the pharmaceutical staff is in charge of all kinds of patients, in many others –especially the large ones- this service is organized according to patients’ ages, giving Neonatal Pharmacists a good opportunity to dedicate exclusively to their choice. However, the other age ranges –adults and pediatric- can complement and result useful for the Neonatal Pharmacist, especially taking into account that there is no postgraduate education available for this discipline, just the related modules many universities offer. Thus, both clinical and pediatric pharmacists enrich their knowledge and experience by assisting to conferences and taking advantage of others’ experience, as well as of the available information about the subject. However, despite the fact of not being legally contemplated, the contribution of Neonatal Pharmacists to health care is usually very appreciated for caregivers from different fields.
