Clinical Pharmacist Career

Clinical Pharmacy specialization is known to be one of the most rewarding. Clinical Pharmacists are closely involved in the patient treatment, carrying a responsibility for the medicines they expend, since their jobs are more related to the selection of medications than regular pharmacists.

Clinical pharmacists play an active role in the health care staff. When things do not turn out so well and the patient has a bad reaction to a certain medicine, the pharmacist must notify the physician and suggest a more suitable treatment. However, when the patient does get well, the responsibility of this career pays off, since the pharmacist knows he was directly involved in that recuperation.

All these considerations turn obvious the fact that a Clinical Pharmacist Career implies a trust relationship with physicians. This relationship can be difficult at first, since many physicians are not used to work along with pharmacists, while others tend to judge all clinical pharmacists based on some negative interactions they may have had in the past. In general terms, these kinds of bonds take time and effort, but once the clinical pharmacist demonstrates his reliability and worth, physicians start leaving their patients to his charge with peace of mind when it comes to drug therapy.

A Clinical Pharmacist Career usually requires a year of residence instead of specific continuing education. However, hospitals always tend to hire experienced clinical candidates, since problems are more likely to occur in this very unpredictable job. Hospital patient cases can be very critical, which may require stronger drugs and higher doses, a risk allowed to be taken just by qualified clinical pharmacists, since they are able to closely evaluate and follow the patient response. Ambulatory care clinics and industrial environment also request the presence of a clinical pharmacist in their health care staff.

Thus, making rounds with physicians, suggesting drug therapies, monitoring the patient’s development, saving costs and improving the quality of health care services are the main duties of a Clinical Pharmacist Career. After a minimum of two years doing these jobs – clinical pharmacists are usually taken as qualified experts.
